I have struggled with hormonal acne and blemishes that refuse to go away for years. After recently having another bad experience at the dermatologist, I decided enough was enough. Since no one understands my skin better than I do, I did research on hormonal acne and created my own personalized skincare regimen.
To start, I have found that the more simple you keep your skin care regimen, the better. Please keep in mind that I am not a skin care expert and what works for me might not work for you. But if you’ve struggled with hormonal acne and can’t seem to find a solution, give my routine a shot:
Morning
Step 1: Shortly after I wake up, I gently wash my face with Exuviance Moisturizing Antibacterial Facial Cleanser. I take my time when washing, massaging my face until the product turns into a thick foam. After a minute or so I rinse clean. I love Exuviance cleanser; it’s an antibacterial, soap-free cleanser that works to dissolve impurities and help reduce problematic bacteria. It’s non-irritating formula leaves skin clean and soft while the conditioners and antioxidants soothe, protect and improve skin texture through polyhydroxy acid (PHA) for anti-aging benefits.
Step 2: I apply Target’s Up & Up Facial Moisturizing Oil Free Lotion with SPF 15. I usually wear this on days I wear makeup because my makeup has an SPF too. For days makeup free I wear Coppertone Oil Free Faces with SPF 50 as a moisturizer.
Night
Step 1: Since I’m usually wearing makeup (or SPF) during the day, I use Simple Kind to Skin Cleansing Facial Wipes to remove any products on my face at night. After I take my makeup off, I repeat morning steps 1 & 2 (with Up & Up moisturizer.) Over time, old skin cells start to pile up on the surface of the skin it can cause your skin to look rough, dry and dull. The buildup also results in excess oil and clogged pores. So, once a week I will use Blackhead Scrub exfoliator with my Clarisonic brush. Make sure you don’t over-exfoliate!
Makeup
For years I have been trying to find the perfect makeup brand for hormonal acne-prone skin. I knew I needed to find a product that was packed with ingredients that help improve my skin instead of harm it. That’s when I discovered IT Cosmetics, which I use as my permanent makeup to keep my skin clear. (You can learn more about my experience with IT here.)
Diet
The types of foods you consume can also exacerbate your acne. I make sure to limit my sugar, carbs, dairy and chocolate intakes. Foods that enhance your blood sugar like: pasta, bread and sweets can increase your skin’s inflammatory response and cause breakouts.
That’s it! I hope this helps some of you who are really struggling and that you don’t find this too overwhelming – it’s simple, once you get into the routine. Also, I am on the hunt for a good serum! If any of you have any recommendations please let me know.
