Happy Friday guys! Lately, I have been getting so many questions about how to start a blog. So I thought it would be nice to do a post since starting a blog can be easy and straightforward– especially if you understand the major differences. Here are tips, websites, and articles to use when starting your blog:
Tips: Main Differences
• Hosting = where your blog lives online
• Website = where all your blog content will be
• Domain name = blog URL
Basically, a website is stored on a hosting plan that is accessed using a domain name.
Hosting / Website:
• Bluehost: (is expensive and not worth it if you’re just starting out)
• WordPress: WordPress is a blogging platform service.
– WordPress.com = free blogging platform service with an option for you to have a premium account.
– WordPress.org = CMS (content management system) this will be installed on your hosting plan and use to run your blog.
The main difference is that .org there is less customization/features where .com you have the ability to make your site completely your own.
I use WordPress.com with a premium plan.
Here are the different services they offer: https://wordpress.com/pricing/
Domain:
Find your niche and the main theme of your blog before you decide to settle on your domain which is blog name/ URL. I got this idea from one of my favorite bloggers Brittany, from Thrifts and Threads.
Steps for creating your domain:
1. Identify keywords that you would associate with your blog
For me:
– black clothes
– urban feel
– street style
– paired clothes
– trending fashion
2. Find synonyms for keywords
– black = mysterious, unknown, unpredictable
– urban = city, townie
– paired = uniform, together, plus
3. Put keywords and synonyms together to come up with a catchy blog name
– blackplusblackblog.com
Finally, be sure to choose a domain name that is…
1. easy to remember
2. unique and descriptive
3. trustworthy (“.com”, “.org” or “.net”)
Now you have your name here’s how you register/buy the domain:
1. Check to see if it already exists on GoDaddy https://goo.gl/YOeTyc
(you can also register/ buy it here)
2. OR, use WordPress to install it: https://en.support.wordpress.com/all-about-domains/
Congratulations! You now know how to make a blog using WordPress. You’ve installed WordPress and set up your blog, all on your own! Yass!
If you guys find this helpful, I can let you know where to go from there when it comes to how to work WordPress and set up / install your theme.
xx,
